Edwin Wiley was born at Coal Creek, Tenn., and educated at the University of Tennessee and George Washington University, receiving a Ph.D. degree from the latter in 1911. He married Garnet Noel of Nashville, Tenn., in 1902. He worked as a librarian at the University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt University, the Library of Congress, the University of California at Berkeley, and the Peoria Public Library. Niblack was a native of Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana; an officer in the U.S. Navy (1880-1923), serving in the Spanish-American War in Cuba and the Philippines (1898-1901), and as a naval attacheĢ to the American Legation in Buenos Aires, Argentina (1910-1911), and Berlin, Germany (1911-1913); and reached the rank of Rear Admiral (1917).
